WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WICKER AND RATTAN?





There is no material on Earth called wicker. Wicker is a process and Rattan is a product.

In its original form, rattan is a relative of the tropical palm tree. Rattan is a specific material, but wicker is the general process of weaving rattan or other materials into finished goods.

A rattan chair is definitely made from rattan, but a wicker chair may use other materials such as straw or bamboo slats around a rattan frame. In the 1960's and 70's Dutch Designers Martin Visser and Dirk Van Sleidrecht used the wicker/rattan and rush seating in many of their furniture designs. The company Rohe Noordwolde manufactures a lot of the old rattan.

Seemingly being generally out of fashion after the boom of the 1960's and 1970's, West German pottery has been gaining massive popularity and a dedicated collector base that appreciates its style and eccentric aesthetic. Some of these ceramic pieces are hand-thrown while others are mass-produced stock shapes. Even stock shapes are made unique by the rough textures and the huge range of individual glazes. Size and shape can a petite three inches to well over a few feet tall for the larger floor vases. Grimm Artisanal Ales Brewery ,  a sleek yet airy space on Metropolitan Avenue with sitting room for 45,  which opens June 30.  The Chairs are from (none other than) Amsterdam Modern .
