Creative work is tough to evaluate and compare. Personal style invariably biases our assessment of design.

There is however, one category of furniture design to which a certain amount of objectivity can be applied – industrial chairs. To make a stacking chair comfortable for people of all shapes and sizes, economic to produce on a massive scale, and uniquely aesthetically pleasing is a design problem of the utmost subtlety. Three of our absolute favorites from the category are Friso Kramer, Wim Rietveld and Willy Van Der Meeren. Check out a classic chair from each of them below.

Seemingly being generally out of fashion after the boom of the 1960's and 1970's, West German pottery has been gaining massive popularity and a dedicated collector base that appreciates its style and eccentric aesthetic. Some of these ceramic pieces are hand-thrown while others are mass-produced stock shapes. Even stock shapes are made unique by the rough textures and the huge range of individual glazes. Size and shape can a petite three inches to well over a few feet tall for the larger floor vases. Factories that produced these ceramic pieces include Baykeramik, Carstens, Dumler & Breiden, Jopeko, Roth, Ruscha, and Scheurich. Many are only marked with a serial number and often with German or W. Vogue Features Brooklyn’s Newest Brewery, Grimm, Outfitted by Amsterdam Modern

Grimm Artisanal Ales Brewery ,  a sleek yet airy space on Metropolitan Avenue with sitting room for 45,  which opens June 30.  The Chairs are from (none other than) Amsterdam Modern .
